The InFLUX Movie Night – A 40-Year-Old Revolution That Still Burns – Cancelled
This month’s movie: This week’s film: Born in Flames 1983 (in English, English subtitles)
Born in Flames (1983) is nothing short of a feminist call to arms, a radical vision of an alternate future that feels disturbingly relevant even 40 years later. Set in a post-revolutionary New York City, where a socialist government has supposedly solved society’s problems, the film exposes how deeply entrenched issues like sexism, racism, and class inequality persist. But the women in this world won’t accept it.
At its heart, Born in Flames is an electrifying manifesto for women’s rights, a punk-fueled, guerrilla-style film that confronts viewers with the fiery anger of those left behind by the system. As women’s groups—including a ragtag pirate radio station and a militant faction led by women of color—rise up to demand true equality, the film showcases a vision of collective, intersectional action that resonates powerfully today, in the era of #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, and ongoing fights for LGBTQIA+ rights.
Yes, the film has its shortcomings: while it’s unflinching in its critique of race and class dynamics, its focus on the LGBTQIA+ community is narrowly centered on lesbian activists. The broader spectrum of queer identities and struggles is noticeably absent. But what it does offer is a rare depiction of queer women leading a revolutionary movement with fierce determination—an image that still breaks norms and challenges perceptions.
Despite its imperfections, Born in Flames continues to shock and inspire. Its scrappy, DIY aesthetic feels almost prophetic in an age of political unrest, as if director Lizzie Borden knew that the struggle for real social change was far from over. The questions it asks about who truly benefits from “revolution” are still hauntingly relevant, and its unapologetic demand for radical change is as urgent now as it was in the ’80s.
